With the recent announcement of Capture One 7 Pro, many of our clients are rushing to try out all of what the new version has to offer and can add to workflows. Like with any new major software release, bugs exist that can hinder work and a previous version of Capture One may be needed as backup or for testing purposes. This post will guide you through having two activated versions of Capture One Pro installed at the same time, Capture One Pro 6 and Capture One Pro 7.

So you already have Capture One 6 installed and have just downloaded 7 and are waiting to install it, but would still like to retain functionality of 6. The default installation for Capture One Pro 6 is within the Applications folder; this is where we will start first.

You will need to change the name for Capture One Pro 6 to able to have Capture One Pro 7 run properly, do this by either clicking or hitting enter on the Capture One Pro 6 icon while it is highlighted, this will allow you to edit the name. We suggest renaming Capture One 6 to ‘Capture One II’ or ‘Capture One Old’, just something that is different from the original name.

Note: This may not happen for everyone but keep on the lookout. When I went to change the name I discovered that Capture One Pro 6 was locked and I could not edit the name. The is easily remedied by right clicking on Capture One Pro 6 and selecting ‘Get Info’. Within this newly opened window make sure the lock at the bottom right is unlocked, you may have to enter your admin password to unlock it. Once this is unlocked change all the permissions to ‘Read & Write’, this will now allow you to go back into the Application folder and change Capture One Pro 6’s name.

You can now install Capture One Pro 7 that you have been so eagerly awaiting! Have it install to the application folder and you are good to go there. Now the next time you open Capture One Pro 6 it will ask you to reactivate your version, don’t be alarmed as this is normal. Either select the code listed or input it manual if you do not see it. And that is it, you are good to go! Enjoy testing and running both on the same computer. Note as well that both can run at the same time but you can only tether into one application at a time.
