Phase One P+ Digital Backs
The Phase One P+ series of digital backs are available in seven models catering to a variety of shooting styles and projects. The P20+, P21+, P25+, P30+, P40+, P45+, and P65+ make up the full line of Phase One P+’s. These seven models span four sizes of sensors, and range from 16 megapixels to 60 megapixels. All seven models offer photographers reliable, consistent, and proven medium format image quality.

The P+ line of Phase One digital backs is uncompromising in quality. Although there is a wide range of prices, every digital back offers exceptionally high-quality and flexible images. Instead of looking at solutions as entry-level or high-end, it is better to match a digital back to your needs. We recommend you contact us for a personalized evaluation; this is a nuanced process that takes into account your needs, your budget, specials/promotions/trade-ins and other considerations. However, below are a few considerations that are straight forward to get you started.

The Phase One P30+ and Phase One P21+ digital backs use an array of microlenses in front of the sensor, one microlens per pixel. This creates cleaner images at higher ISOs. However, when using movements on a view camera (or technical camera) with a lens wider than 45mm, the light from the lens strikes the microlenses at a strong angle, and creates undesirable effects. Architectural shooters and interior shooters who use wide angle lenses in conjunction with tilts and shifts should not select a P30+ or P21+.
The Phase One P20+ digital back uses a square 16-megapixel sensor. If you want to compose and shoot square images, the Phase One P20+ digital back is your best option. If you’re shooting tethered you can also consider using one of the larger-sensors like the Phase One P45+ or Phase One P65+ and turning on auto-crop to 1×1. Capture Integration can make you a custom mask for easy in-camera composition. It should also be noted the IQ180 can shoot directly to a square raw format. This allows native square shooting at a much higher resolution.
The Phase One P20+, P21+, P25+, P30+, and P45+ are all capable of very long exposures. The P45+ stands out as the best back in the world for exposures longer than a few minutes. The Phase One P40+ and P65+ are each limited to one minute. Ambient temperature, ISO, and raw processing are also important considerations when calculating how long of an exposure each back is capable of for your needs.
