80 Megapixels of OMG

Capture Integration believes that the proof is in the pudding.  That’s why when our owner, Dave Gallagher, was invited to be one of only two US Phase One dealers present at the Dubai pre-release of the Phase One IQ he was very happy to see the back being tested by photographer Bryan Siebel in the most challenging of situations:  Shooting directly into the desert sun.  The results surprised even us.

The Image

About the Shoot

This image was shot with the Phase One IQ180 directly into the sun using a Schneider 110mm LS Lens on a Phase One DF body. The flash synced at 1/800th of a second (this system can be synced up to 1/1600th) producing a vivid and well exposed sky.  The gradation in the raw file, from the strong hotspot of the sun to the darker tones in the sky, are the best we have ever seen from a digital system.  In addition the dark hair, in shadow from direct sunlight, can be recovered with clean detail to an extent we did not believe possible even with extensive experience with high-end digital backs. You simply can not judge this file by a web jpg. Please download the raw yourself and experiment with its flexibility.

About the Raw file

Please note the file format of this RAW is an EIP (read: what the heck is EIP) which contains two versions of this same raw file (with adjustments such as selecting a portrait profile, increased saturation and contrast, and a local dodge on the hair while taking advantage of the amazing shadow detail reserve in this raw file). Feel free to reset the adjustments (in Capture One select “Adjustments > Reset”).  And finally, because this is a pre-release camera it is not yet supported by LightRoom, Aperture, or other raw processors. These raws can only be opened specifically in Capture One 6.1.
