Richard Sexton is a fine art and media photographer whose work has been published and exhibited worldwide. His work has been published in magazines such as Abitare, Archetype, Harper’s, Louisiana Cultural Vistas, Photographer’s Forum, and View Camera. His most recent book, Creole World, published in 2014 by The Historic New Orleans Collection, is the 13th book he has authored, co-authored, or photographed and is now in its 2nd printing. Previously published titles include a monograph Terra Incognita: Photographs of America’s Third Coast, published by Chronicle Books, San Francisco, in 2007. Chronicle Books also published the best selling New Orleans: Elegance and Decadence in 1993 and Vestiges of Grandeur: The Plantations of Louisiana’s River Road in 1999. New Roads and Old Rivers: Louisiana’s Historic Pointe Coupee Parish was published by LSU Press in 2012.

In 1997 Sexton curated the exhibit Sidney Bechet: A World of Jazz 1897-1997, which commemorated the hundredth anniversary of the influential jazz musician’s birth. Sexton has had two major exhibitions at the Ogden Museum of Southern Art in New Orleans. The first exhibit in 2005 featured work from his self-published, handmade art book, The Highway of Temptation and Redemption: A Gothic Travelogue in Two Dimensions. The second exhibit in 2007 featured work from Terra Incognita. This exhibit has subsequently traveled to the Walter Anderson Museum of Art in Ocean Springs, Mississippi, the Polk Museum of Art in Lakeland, Florida, the Pensacola Museum of Art in Pensacola, Florida, and the Southeast Museum of Photography in Daytona Beach, Florida. Creole World, his first exhibit for The Historic New Orleans Collection, was on view at the Laura Simon Nelson Galleries for Louisiana Art from April 15, through December 7, 2014. The exhibit is now traveling to other venues. The first travel venue was Frost Art Museum at Florida International University in Miami and in 2016 it traveled to Meadows Museum of Art at Centenary College in Shreveport, LA, and then to the Hilliard University Art Museum in Lafayette, LA. Sexton’s photographs are included in the holdings of The Historic New Orleans Collection, New Orleans Museum of Art, the Ogden Museum of Southern Art, LSU Museum of Art, Polk Museum of Art, Frost Art Museum, Pensacola Museum of Art, Southeast Museum of Photography, and numerous private collections. In 2014 Richard Sexton received the Michael P. Smith Award for Documentary Photography from the Louisiana Endowment for the Humanities. Also in 2014, Richard Sexton was included in the American Illustrator-American Photographer Latin American Fotografia 3 Awards Annual.

Zack states that he’s been actively pursuing photography as a career for twenty years and it’s been a hell of a trip thus far. He’s risen and fallen a number of times and truly feels that he’s finally reached base camp. On a clear day he can see his goal. On the not so clear days he is still climbing and still pushing. Zack highlights that he is still pushing himself, his subjects and his craft.

These days, Zack thinks of himself more as a director than a photographer. He tends to work with subjects who aren’t that comfortable in front of the camera and direct them from start to finish.

He’s traveled through 49 of the 50 states and five of the seven continents. From a boardroom in New York, to a film set in Los Angeles, to a farm in Texas, to the streets of Hong Kong, to the high Atlas Mountains of Morocco, he pursues photography with everything he has.

After an overview of important details in the process of printing and re-printing images, Blazer will provide valuable insight relating to art exhibitions, selling prints, interacting with galleries, and the hardships of online-focused selling.

Richard Sexton began his career in professional photography in the 1970s. He is currently in the final stages of completing his 14th book—Enigmatic Stream: The Industrial Landscape of the Lower Mississippi River. His publishers have included The Historic New Orleans Collection; Chronicle Books, San Francisco; LSU Press, Baton Rouge, LA; Pelican Publishing, Gretna, LA; River Road Historical Society, Destrehan, LA; Oak Alley Foundation, Vacherie, LA; and Compass American Guides (imprint of Random House, New York). Each of his book projects has consisted of elaborate photo essays in which the primary narrative is visual, rather than verbal. Whether it’s a book, an exhibit, a portfolio, or an editorial assignment, telling a story in pictures, is his main interest in photography. So much so that he sometimes describes himself as an author, photo essayist, or even raconteur, rather than a photographer. He will discuss the evolution of his career and the project based structure of his photographic work.
