Photographer Richard Sexton‘s solo exhibition, Creole World, is a complex, multi-layered photo essay linking New Orleans with its cultural kin, the Caribbean basin. Richard Sexton documents his travels through New Orleans, Panama, Ecuador, Columbia, Haiti, Bolivia, and Cuba with his photographs serving as artifacts demonstrating the deep-seeded cultural links between these seemingly disparate communities.
Creole World offers a glimpse into neighborhoods and cities that are inaccessible to most, such as El Chorrillo in Panama City, a poor neighborhood adjacent to the historic Casco Viejo district of Panama. Richard Sexton also captured his journey through Cuba, a trip most Americans can never take, including images of Havana, Cienfuegos, Trinidad, Santa Clara, and Santiago de Cuba. Creole World documents the culmination of these travels, immersing the viewers in an exotic world that they would likely never have the opportunity to see for themselves.
Richard Sexton
Richard Sexton was born in Atlanta and raised in Colquitt, Georgia. He graduated from Emory University and later studied at the San Francisco Art Institute. He currently lives and works in New Orleans. He has written several books including New Orleans: Elegance and Decadence, Vestiges of Grandeur and Terra Ingognita: Photographs of America’s Third Coast.
Creole World has received national media attention. Including reviews from, The New York Review of Books, The Wall Street Journal, Architectural Digest, Garden and Gun, and Southern Living.
“While it actually resembles no other city upon the face of the earth,”wrote Lafcadio Hearn of New Orleans, “it owns suggestions of towns in Italy, and in Spain, of cities in England and in Germany, of seaports in the Mediterranean, and of seaports in the tropics.” There’s no better illustration of this point than the photographs of Richard Sexton. For four decades Sexton has been playing a transcontinental game of Concentration, pinballing between New Orleans and the cities of the Creole diaspora-Havana, Quito, Cartagena, Cap-Haïtien –documenting resonancesin architecture and style. His photographs have now been collected in the gorgeous Creole World: Photographs of New Orleans and the Latin Caribbean Sphere…
