Phase One released Capture Pilot 1.7 today in the iTunes App Store. This biggest feature this update contains is Live View from IQ250 over Wifi & AdHoc, as well as bug fixes, an updated protocol for connecting over Ad-hoc (significantly faster and more stable connection process), and a new look designed for iOS 8. It is important to note that this release no longer supports iOS 6. We will continue to test this release, but initially it’s *somewhat* stable.
We recommend waiting upgrading to Capture Pilot 1.7 for the moment until our testing is complete.

Initial Testing Results
During our initial testing, the app crashed several times, but it recovered very quickly. In fact, contrary to past experiences, the app worked best when connected to the IQ250 over Ad-hoc! In this release, Phase One introduced an Apple-based connectivity protocol called “Bonjour” into the Ad-hoc connection method – and it is lightning fast for designating IP addresses to connected iOS device. Within seconds of telling my iPad to join the digital back’s network it was connected and ready to go, able to open Capture Pilot and work with server right away. When attempting to connect over general Wifi (the digital back and iPad on the CI’s wifi network), I would often have some of the camera controls, but unable to capture an image from the iOS device until I initiated a capture first from the camera. However when connecting to the digital back via Ad-hoc, everything worked as designed.
We also experienced the Capture Pilot app crashing during Live View – occurring almost every time within a few seconds over existing Wifi, but sometimes not at all over Ad-hoc. Even when it crashed, we could immediately open the application, select the server, and jump right back into things. While annoying, it didn’t really slow us down too much. Below is a video of the live view in action (app crash and all). There are some things to work out and further test, but we really like where this is going.
Firmware Update Required
In order to use the Live View function with Capture Pilot, you will need to install the latest firmware on your IQ250 digital back (version 1.03.10). You can easily install this by downloading Phase One’s firmware updater from their website and connecting the back to your computer (be sure it is NOT connected to a camera body and that Capture One isn’t open).
