Available April 2013: New EOS 5D Mark III Firmware Update

Canon 5D III Firmware

Firmware Provides Uncompressed HDMI Output and Improved AF Performance

Canon Press Release – In response to strong requests from professionals working in the fields of cinema and TV production, as well as supporting the advanced needs of photographers, Canon is proud to offer a free firmware update, scheduled to be available in April 2013, that greatly expands the EOS 5D Mark III’s performance and usability.

Uncompressed HDMI Output

When shooting video, HDMI output makes possible the recording of HD uncompressed video from the 5D Mark III to an external recorder via the camera’s HDMI terminal. This, in turn, facilities the editing of video data with minimal image degradation for greater on-site workflow. Additionally, video being captured can be displayed on an external monitor, enabling real-time on-site monitoring of HD video during shooting.

Cross-Type AF Support at f/8

Ideal for photographers who often use Canon EF super-telephoto lenses with extenders, the new firmware allows cross-type autofocusing with the center AF points when the maximum aperture becomes as small as f/8. This new feature greatly expands the range of EF lens/extender combinations that support autofocus when used with the EOD 5D Mark III.
